La del pirata cojo

Guillermo Prieto, además de un gran poeta, periodista y catedrático del siglo XIX,  fue funcionario público de la administración de Don Benito Juárez y un gran patriota mexicano.

En Guadalajara, ante un batallón del ejército que había decidido cambiar de bando y unirse a los conservadores, Prieto se interpuso como escudo, entre la tropa y Juárez, y comenzó un discurso, cuyo prólogo fueron las frases arriba citadas: "Levanten esas armas! ¡Los valientes no asesinan! Si quieren sangre ¡Bébanse la mía!" Dicho discurso logró que todos los presentes estallaran en llanto y decidieran mantenerse fieles a la causa liberal. Con este discurso, además, logró salvarle la vida al Benemérito de las Américas, Don Benito Pablo Juárez García, insigne oaxaqueño y, en opinión de muchos de nosotros, el mejor presidente de México, por su valentía, honestidad, temple, determinación, valor y patriotismo.

Guillermo Prieto , in addition to be a  great poet, journalist and university professor of the XIX century,   was  a government official at the administration of  Benito Juarez and  great patriotic  Mexican.

In Guadalajara, before a battalion of the army that had decided to change  side and to be united to the conservatives, Prieto interposed himself as a shield, between the troops and Juárez, and began a speech , whose prologue was the phrases above mentioned: Raise those weapons! Brave men  do not assassinate! If  you want blood, drink mine! !  Thitspeech obtained that all the presents exploded in weeping and decided to stay faithful to the liberal cause. With this speech, also ,  save the life of  Benito Pablo Juárez Garcia, the meritorious son of  Oaxaca and, in opinion of many of us, the best president of Mexico, because of his courage, honesty, determination, value and patriotism.

Huaxyacac- Oaxaca ("en la nariz de los guajes"/ On the guaje´s nose. Guaje is  a pear shape jar to keep water that is used on many small towns in Mexico )

Oaxaca se encuentra localizado en la porción meridional de la República Mexicana. Representa el 4.85% del territorio nacional, y es el estado con el mayor número de municipios: 570.

Surcan este estado, 8 regiones hidrológicas. El 38.92% de su territorio está cubierto de bosques, el 37.6% son selvas. Los pastizales cubren el 8.27% y cuenta con 14.37% de tierras cultivadas.

En Oaxaca se presentan casi todos los climas, lo que hace que este estado sea uno de los más ricos en recursos naturales. Hay cerca de 21 especies de flora (entre ellas, maderas preciosas y especias) y alrededor de 106 especies diferentes de fauna. Susu recursos mineros incluyen plata, oro, óxido de titanio, hierro y zinc, entre otros.

Oaxaca is located in the southern portion of the Mexican Republic. It represents the 4,85% of the national territory, and it is the state with the greater number of municipalities: 570.

This state is crossed by , 8 hidrologyc regions. The 38,92% of its territory is covered by forests, the 37,6% are jungles. Pasture ground cover the 8,27% and counts on 14,37% of cultivated areas.

In Oaxaca almost all kind of weather appear , that makes this state  one of richest in natural resources. It has near 21 species of flora (among them, precious wood and spices) and around 106 different species  of animals. Its mineral resources includes silver, gold, oxid of  titanium, iron and zinc, among others.

Oaxaca cuenta también con una gran riqueza cultural: 37% de sus habitantes, habla una de las 11 lenguas iindígenas que todavía existen en el estado: mixteco, zapoteco, mixe, zoque, chinanteco, chontal, mazateco, chatino, amuzgo y  trique. Considerando que, en todo México, existen 60 lenguas nativas, las 11 lenguas que se hablan en Oaxaca representan el 18.3%. El mixteco, por ejemplo, es hablado por más de 452 mil habitantes y el zapoteco por 450 mil.

Oaxaca also has  a great cultural heritage: 37% of its inhabitants, speak one  of the 11 native languages that still exist in the state: mixteco, zapoteco, mixe, zoque, chinanteco, chontal, mazateco, chatino, amuzgo and trique. Considering that, in all Mexico, 60 native languages exist, the 11 languages that are spoken in Oaxaca represent the 18,3%. Mixteco, for example, it is spoken by more than 452 thousand inhabitants and zapoteco by 450 thousands.

Oaxaca cuenta con 14 sitios arqueológicos, entre los cuales se encuentran los famosos Monte Albán y Mitla. Es famoso por sus textiles de lana y algodón; su alfarería de barro negro; productos de palma, carrizo e ixtle; talabartería y hojalatería, así como su joyería de oro y plata.

La ciudad de Oaxaca y Monte Albán, por su parte, son Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

Oaxaca has 14 archaeological sites, among them the  famous Monte Albán and Mitla. It´s also  famous by its textiles of wool and cotton; its black mud pottery; palm , reed and ixtle products; , as well as its gold and silver jewelry shop .

The city of Oaxaca and Monte Albán, on the other hand,  are considered as  Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity.

Sin embargo, a pesar de toda esta riqueza natural y cultural, Oaxaca es uno de los Estados más pobres de México (junto con Chiapas y Guerrero):

• El 78.4% de su población, sabe leer y escribir, pero sólo el 33.3% cuenta con instrucción posterior a la educación elemental.
• Respecto del total nacional, el estado cuenta sólo con el 3% de establecimientos comerciales y con el 2% de servicios.
• La tasa de mortalidad infantil y materna es 2.5 veces mayor que el promedio nacional. La esperanza de vida es inferior, así como la vida libre de discapacidad.
• Cerca del 50% de la población vive en pobreza extrema.
• Junto con Guerrero y Chiapas, Oaxaca es el estado del que provienen la mayoría de los inmigrantes mexicanos que cruzan la frontera hacia los Estados Unidos.

Nevertheless, in spite of all this natural and cultural wealth, Oaxaca is one of the poorest States of Mexico (along with Chiapas and Guerrero):

•  78,4% of its population, know how to read and to write, but only t 33,3% count on instruction subsequent to the elementary education  .
• Respect to the national average, the state counts only with  3% of commercial establishments and 2% of services.
• The rate of infantile and maternal mortality is 2,5 times greater than the national average. The life expectancy is inferior, as well as the handiccaped free life.
• Near 50% of the population  lives in extreme poverty.
• Along with Guerrero and Chiapas, Oaxaca is the state where  most of the Mexican immigrants who cross the border towards the United States, come.
  

OXACA SOMOS TODOS/WE ALL ARE OAXACA

Todavía está fresca la sangre de periodistas, profesores, civiles y estudiantes de Oaxaca. Todavía está latente la indignación contra la PFP (policía Federal Preventiva) quienes, además de robar, vandalizar y defecar en la plaza de Oaxaca, se ha dedicado a asesinar y desaparecer a nuestros hermanos oaxaqueños. Todavía están presentes las desigualdades  y, el día de ayer:

• El Secretario de Seguridad Pública, Eduardo Medina Mora,  justificaba las acciones violentas de la PFP, diciendo que el "operativo" no estaba destinado entrar al campus de la Universidad y que, su objetivo era  restablecer la paz en la ciudad y limpìar las vías de comunicación terrestre.
• Vicente Fox decía que, gracias a su administración, Calderón recibiría un México con estabilidad y libre de dramas para los bolsillos de los mexicanos. Pero al mismo tiempo declaraba que, en el mundo, no existían presidentes que no dejaran problemas a sus sucesores.
• Un periodista de TV Azteca, trataba de inocentes e ignorantes a quienes defendían las barricadas en Oaxaca, porque no sabían que la "causa" son los intereses políticos y económicos de sus líderes.
• Los noticieros de Televisa, sólo reportaban  los heridos de la PFP y  de algún periodista adherido a sus empresas.

The blood of journalists, professors, civilians and students of Oaxaca is still fresh. Still the indignation against the PFP (Federal Preventive Police) is latent that, besides to rob, to vandalize and to defecate in the main square of Oaxaca, they  have been killing and kidnapping to many of our brothers in Oaxaca. Still the inequalities are present and, yesterday:

• The Secretary of Public Security, Eduardo Medina Mora,  justified the violent actions of the PFP, saying that the "operative"  was not destined to enter to  the  University  campus and thatits objective was to restore peace in the city and to clean the streets and  ground communication lines.
• Vicente Fox said that, thanks to his administration, Calderón would receive a Mexico with  stability and free of dramas for the pockets of the Mexicans. But at the same time he declared that, in the world, there are not presidents  who did not leave problems to their successors.
• A journalist of Aztec TV, treats as  innocents and ignorants to those who defended the barricades in Oaxaca, because they did not know that the problem is caused  only because of  the political and economic interests of their leaders.
• The reporters of Televisa, t only reported the wounded of the PFP and some journalist adhered to its companies. There were nothing about civilians wounded.

 ¿De qué paz hablan estos señores? ¿De la establecida mediante toletes, bombas de agua, tanquetas antimotines, metralla y gases lacrimógenos lanzados por helicópteros?

¿Estabilidad, en qué México? ¿Dónde vivimos la mayoría? ¿Donde sueñan esas minorías corruptas y escandalosamente ricas?

¿Es la gente, toda esa gente, que sirve de escudo humano o pelea con piedras y con hambre, toda ella ignorante?

What kind of peace these gentlemen are talking about ?  Of that one  established  by means of cudgels, water pumps, anti-riot  tanks, shrapnel and tear gases sent by helicopters?

 Stability, in what Mexico?  Where  the majority of us are living?  Where the  corrupt and scandalously rich minorities are dreaming?

 Is people, all that people, that serves as human shields or fight with stones and hunger, all ignorante ?

This incapacity, of the Mexican power, of not reading the reality that  Mexico lives. The distrust in them, the misery in us, is that makes us exclaim, as  Guillermo Prieto once did: Raise those weapons! Brave men  do not assassinate! If  you want blood, drink mine!
